Governor McAuliffe Announces Veteran Hiring Commitment Milestone in Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Program
~V3 Companies Reach a Total of 10,000 Jobs Pledged for Virginia Veterans~
Governor Terry McAuliffe announced today that companies participating in the Commonwealth's Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Program have now pledged to hire a total of 10,000 Virginia veterans into jobs throughout the state. This milestone comes a day after Governor McAuliffe highlighted the V3 Program in his first State of the Commonwealth address to a joint session of the General Assembly.
Governor McAuliffe said, “This milestone of 10,000 jobs pledged for Virginia’s veterans is a testament to our V3 companies who have recognized that hiring veterans is good for their business, it’s good for the veteran, and it’s good for the Commonwealth.”
Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs John C. Harvey, Jr. added, “More and more companies are recognizing that their labor demands can be met by proactively recruiting, hiring, and retaining veterans. The skills and training they received while serving our country translate into a profitable skillset for Virginia businesses.”
Governor McAuliffe has also announced proposals to expand the V3 Program, and to reward V3 companies for successfully recruiting, hiring, and retaining transitioning service members and veterans. These bills will be considered during the 2015 legislative session.
Between 2009 and 2013, Virginia added more veterans to its labor force than all other states combined. In four years, Virginia’s veteran labor force has grown by 12%, averaging an increase of nearly 13,000 veteran workers per year, according to the latest annual data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"Virginia's veterans are well-educated, highly-trained, and ready for a successful civilian career," said the Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Services John L. Newby II. "It’s imperative that as more and more service members transition from the military to the civilian workforce that we have companies here in Virginia that are proactively seeking to employ them. With 10,000 jobs pledged for veterans in just over two years, it’s proven that V3 companies are up to the challenge."
Since June 2012, the V3 Program has accepted 234 member companies. These companies have made committed to hire more than 10,000 veterans, and have reported nearly 7,000 veterans hired in Virginia to date.
